If the answer is 'Alex stared at Marta and said nothing', would 'What did Alex do before Marta laughed?' be an appropriate question?

Context:
Alex stared at Marta and said nothing.
Marta laughed. ‘It’s all right,’ she said. ‘I’m not afraid of the President’s murderer. You can stay here tonight, Alex Dinon, and have a good sleep.
