Context would help, but I don't really see any "mistake" in the sentence, except perhaps it might read better with "that" as indicated.

I have an original sentence:
At technology-consulting firm Acumen Solutions Inc., certain consultants work from home, but only after "they have a proven track record," said Shally Stanley, a managing director in its McLean, Va., office.

Saying that "certain consultants" work from home is not the same as reporting that someone said he is "certain that consultants work from home."
