Dear teachers,

Would you be kind enough to give me a leg up with the interpretation of the expression in bold in the following sentence?

One day a mad dog turns up on their street, and Atticus reluctantly shoots it. The kids are surprised to learn that their father is a crack shot, since he’s never told them anything about it.

crack = first-rate; excellent

crack shot = crack marksman
