I watch the news, mostly. I love the History Channel -- educational look at everything from wars to biographies of famous people to geology to famous historical events. I watch American football, college basketball, and a little baseball. I like old sitcoms, such as Mash, Cheers, etc. And I watch movies, new and old. Fortunately, I have about 180 channels. :wink:

And your sports interests are really American-style. All of those are unable to be popular in China. Baseball, I think it's pretty good, but football. ........ I'm a big fan of soccer and you guys misused word that changed my football to soccer. I knew this word until my college time. It's all your fault. :wink:

180 channels? we can see about 30 mostly. Maybe more in Southern China.But never more than 50. Btw, I thought no matter how many TV stations there are, those're only crap. I get used to download programs of Taiwan or American movies. :wink: Pirated for free. DVDRIP.

I would like to add though, the Chinese translation on the early episodes was terrible.

How much is one season in China then? :wink: I didn't watch Chinese subtitles too. I really feel that some contents of Friends are hardly translated well to Chinese. :wink: Also, CCTV has cancelled the plan of showing Friends in China because of its sexual topics. So if CCTV had to reluctantly show this TV sitcom, then you'd get a chance to see the worst and most horrible subtitles and abridgement ever in the world. :wink:

Discussing politics and/or religion can lead to argumentation because people's opinions on politics and religion are deeply rooted. Such 'touchy subjects' are best suited for political or religious forums, not language forums.

usingenglish.com is a language forum. General Discussions should be about general topics. Politics and Religion are specific topics, not to mention "hot" topics: topics that can anger people.

I think Rachel is the most loveable gal in it, Pheebe is freakly funny for me. She's very exotic. Chandeler? If we can totally understand every singal joke he made, this sitcom would become funnier.

Ross, geeky fun PHD. totally different from the image of Chinese scholars. :wink: I think he's true because he's like a person but a Saint.

As I see it, there have been some obvious changes in Ross and Joey's personality traits. I am not saying that they change with the time passing(everyone does). I mean, the script editors may have changed their ideas of these two characters. At the beginning of the series, they seemed to present a stupid Ross with all the ridiculous things he does in the first season. At that time, Ross looks more of a bookworm. But from then on, he's changed into a completely different man--charming, attractive to a lot of woman, funny talking... You may argue that he acts stupidly because his wife just leaves him and he returns to his normal when he gets the woman he has dreamed about since high school. But I don't think so.

On the other hand, Joey seems to "abruptly" become such a guy who is even lacking in some common sense. Maybe the editors figured it might be more appropriate to put some "stupidity elements" in Joey. I don't see he is that stupid in the first season as he is in the later ones.

A bit lengthy, but I think you will get my point. :wink:

Eric, use "too" when you agree with somebody. In other words, use "too" only in a positive sense. Example:

• I do that too.

You can also use "either" when you agree with somebody, but only in a "negative" sense. Example:

• I don't do that either.

By the way, I like your "freakly funny" expression. It is the kind of creative use of the language that a native speaker might employ.

I totally agree with you, Great Ron, but unfortunately you never could be my teahcer in reality who could give me an appropriate remark.

Both of my Chinese and English examiners didn't appreciate the words or expressions I made up from Chinese original meanings, so........I had to change myself and became carefully applying English on exams.

Btw, Americans think Lincon was the greatest president of the US, so I thought it's the same that Americans should always regard that Civil War as a glorious achievement of Northern Army. However, why didn't I see any kind of movies which put up a positive comment on this war at all?

Tell you a story for compariosn of different cultures. Any kind of negtive things of China showing in American movies or games would cause an extensive mood of anti-America in China. And of course, Chinese movies are the same, so Chinese are more willing to enjoy wathing movies with positive China's images, no matter whether they're true or....... :wink:

I think that one thing the war did was make this (USA) one country. On the other hand, more than 500,000 lost their lives in that war (more than in World War 2).

Well, the one movie I know is fiction. The other is, I am pretty sure, also fiction. It is true tho that some terrible things happened during that war. People argue about some of those things to this day.

I suppose that is one difference between the two countries. People here are free to produce movies that show the country in a bad light, and the government may not tell them that they can't do that. No country is perfect. But some places criticism is allowed and other places it is not. Here people can say pretty much whatever they want in whatever way they want to say it. What they say might even be wrong or even harmful, but the government is not allowed to decide that.
