Hello Everyone,

hi, blacknomi,

I am really glad you've mentioned the problem. Actually I was just about to post a similar remark. The sudden outburst of requests to verify a CV or a resume has made me feel thoroughly uneasy :( , with a perspective of the otherwise excellent forum losing its original character.

Surprisingly, many of the applicants who claim their knowledge of English to be at an advanced level, seem unable to read and comprehend a simple instruction telling them where to place such requests. Some people's insistence on our experts' work at evaluation of their applications struck me as totally irrelevant here.

Also it's good to know that adding the simple 'please', or equivalent, is not only an indication of the poster's good manners but also increases chances of receiving constructive replies from a wider circle of members. Without a word of polite request any such enquiry assumes the form of an imperative, which is even more annoying.

I wish I didn't have to write all this. I wonder what other members think. Am I being overly and unduly sensitive?

Hope to see you all soon on the forum in a better mood (on my part, at least...)

Regards,

Hello, Tomasz,

Well, I think this is what a forum goes. A forum is not only a ciberspace for us to discuss things and stuffs, but also a place for us to tolerate diversity due to any cultural difference.

Indeed, the pouring of CVs and resumes seems to make UE an employer who's keen to recruit the top employers. It's not the atmosphere that it is used to have. I think moderators here need to take time interviewing all of them at the moment. Yeah?! :D

Without a word of polite request any such enquiry assumes the form of an imperative, which is even more annoying.
Maybe the learners are somehow forced to post their resumes here as it is one of their assignements---I guess. If they didn't post it, they would get an "F" -- Again, I guess. But I quite agree with you that using a form of imperative is not pleasant at all because one is asking for the help there. I see few posters come back and discuss his resume with tdol or Ron and few "Thank you" notes as well.

I do think tdol, Ron and Cas do a great job that a few won't do.
Hope you guys still keep your head above the water. :p

Blacknomi,

Thanks for sharing your opinion with us.

By no means was it my intention to criticise the diverse needs and expectations of other forum members. I just felt unpleasantly overwhelmed by the extraordinary amount of posts pertaining to the same topic, and by the lack of elementary expressions of politeness shown by some of the posters (not only those asking for assessment of their CV's, to tell the truth.)

What I was trying to point out was that even though a special forum devoted to CV's and resume has been created, such posts keep appearing in the 'Ask a Teacher' forum.

As regards the enormous amount of work to be done by our Teachers and Experts, I couldn't agree more; they're doing an excellent job, no doubt.

All the best

As it is a public forum, then people are entitled to post anything they like. However, there has been a flood of CVs in the last two days. What we have tried to do tocope with them is to set up a separate section, which might develop into a useful section for learners. I am not goingto go through and correct hundreds of pieces of work as that is not what this forum is for, but if I can help, then I will. I hope that posting will soon settleintothe correct folder and that they will realsise how a forum works and how to use it for their benefit.;-)

DISTURBING!

Hello Everyone, (THIS MUST INCLUDE ME)

hi, blacknomi,

I am really glad you've mentioned the problem. (WHY DO YOU PERVEIVE THIS TO BE A PROBLEM?)

Actually I was just about to post a similar remark. The sudden outburst (THERE WAS A THREAD ANNOUNCING THIS COMING EVENT AND IT WAS INVITED.) of requests to verify a CV or a resume has made me feel thoroughly uneasy (WHY, YOU DO NOT NEED TO READ ANY OF THEM OR GIVE ANY ADVICE.):( , with a perspective of the otherwise excellent forum losing its original character. (SINCE YOU ARE NOT A FORUM FOUNDER HOW DO YOU PRETEND TO SPEAK TO THIS ISSUE?)

Surprisingly, many of the applicants who claim their knowledge of English to be at an advanced level, (THEY ARE ALL CHINESE EFL STUDENTS) seem unable to read and comprehend a simple instruction telling them where to place such requests. (aLL THE MORE REASON THEY NEED TO PARTICIPATE IN THIS FPORUM, TO LEARN.) Some people's insistence on our experts' work at evaluation of their applications struck me as totally irrelevant here.

Without a word of polite request any such enquiry assumes the form of an imperative, which is even more annoying. (YOU LACK CULTURAL SENSATIVITY AND SOUND LIKE A BIGGOT.)

I wish I didn't have to write all this. I wonder what other members think. Am I being overly and unduly sensitive? (YOU DID NOT HAVE TO WRITE THIS. YOU HAVE INSULTED AND OFFENDED 130 NEW FORUM MEMBERS.)

Hope to see you all soon on the forum in a better mood (on my part, at least...) (YOU DEFINATELY NEED AN ATTITUDE ADJUSTMENT BEFORE THE NEXT 250 CHINESE MEMBERS COME ON BOARD IN DECEMBER.

It is rare for Chinese to say thank you or I am sorry.

This is cultural.

Tenseness could drive away courtesy.

The mainland culture is very different from the Taiwan Province culture.
Taiwan is Americanized.

Thank you for helping the mainland students who do not have your advantages!

Dear MW,

(If you don't like the more informal 'hello'.)

Thank you very much for the time you spent on such meticulous analysis of my post and the wording used therein.

While arbitrarily picking several statements I'd made and adding your comments to them you failed to notice, however, that

1. I posted my message in the Members' Discussion Section intended for expressing opinions and exchanging remarks, possibly even negative ones, and not in a direct response to any of the entries that had caused my doubts,

2. My post contains a balanced opinion; I myself was not absolutely certain whether I was right submitting it, and gave an expression of those doubts ('...am I being overly sensitive...?' '...I wonder what the others think...'),

3. In my next post within the same thread, just a couple of screenscrolls below, I emphasised the fact that I was not questioning anybody's rights to express their needs and expectations as to the purpose of the forum.

Even though the overall tone of my post might have sounded like criticism, it certainly did not bear any signs of a personal attack, unlike your reply, I am afraid, with all the acute remarks as to what 'I lack' or 'I need'. My right to present my views and opinions is as good as the next person's, including yourself, and that is what I am trying to defend.

I am sure I did not step across the line, nevertheless I feel compelled to apologise to all who may have felt offended by my comments.

International sensativity

This is an international website and cultural biggotry stands out like tennis shoes worn with a tux.

I am confident that the Chinese students have learned a great deal from your posts.

It's absolutely clear to me that we're talking about two different things.

I had better be quiet.

Regards,

I know, I am a couple of days behind. Gentlemen, when did you last update your personal resume? Put yourselves in the shoes of a student with no clue, limited language skills, high expectations and a way out of their composition problems. They use every means of transportation.
