Dates on formal letters

When writing a formal letter, which is correct; to add letters after the date (e.g 1st, 2nd) or to just put numbers (e.g 1, 2)?

3rd January 2008 is a normal British style.
January 3rd is more the American style.

You can do either, but it is increasingly accepted in business to lose the abbreviation and just use the numerals.
