Dates

Hello, I'm sure I read this in here, but can't find it now. I always thought the correct way to write a date in English was first the date, then the month, then the year. The ladies I teach English to, used to attend evening school and were told that it's first the month, then the date, then the year. I thought this was the American way. Could you be so kind as to tell me which is correct?
