I am wondering if my sentence is grammatically correct. I have tried to use "not lack for sth".

David opened a hotel at the seaside five years ago, and since then never lacked for customers.

I would use has never lacked customers.

I think Bassim is quoting from a dictionary or grammar, where the abbreviation would be used.
