Could you please tell me what does "debate was by common assent adjourned to the following night" mean? (This line is from the novel "Three men in a boat" by Jerome.K.Jerome).

We say "hearing has been adjourned till fourth of June" or "the case was adjourned until the action was taken against him" but "adjourned to the following night I don't understand it.

Does it make it easier if you change 'to' to 'until'?

'By common assent' means that everybody agreed that this should happen.

Okay so "debate was by common assent adjourned to the following night" so it means "adjourned until following night" am I correct?

No, "adjourned to the following night" means "adjourned until the following night". "... debate was by common assent" doesn't form part of "adjourned until the following night".
