Dear teachers,

Would you be kind enough to tell me whether I am right with my interpretation of the expressions in bold in the following sentences?

Such an attitude reflected the determination to decapitate the lower classes, in so far as they did not shed their potential leaders spontaneously by absorption into the lower middle class.

Towards morning the wind abated a little.

abatement = reduction

At dawn, a squad of anti-mafia officers raided the home of the local BSP leader and chairman of the Varna Municipal Council, Borislav Gutsanov, one of the closest associates of President Georgi Parvanov, and diligently cuffed him.

cuff = confine or restrain with or as if with manacles or handcuffs

She took hold of her son by the cuff of the neck.

cuff = the lap consisting of a turned-back hem encircling the end of the sleeve, neck or leg

Peter lost the money that Mother gave him to buy meat, and the store would not let him have meat on the cuff.

Many people buy cars and television sets on the cuff.

on the cuff = agreeing to pay later; to be paid for later; on credit

Some presidents like to speak off the cuff to newspaper reporters but others prefer to think questions over and write their answers.

off the cuff = without preparing ahead of time what you will, say; without preparation

When a heavy drinker quits he must really quit. One little drink of whiskey is enough to drive him off the wagon.

off the wagon = no longer refusing to drink whiskey or other alcoholic beverages; drinking liquor again, after stopping for a while

Serbian nationalists have vehemently opposed the declaration, claiming that the deaths in Srebrenica did not differ from atrocities committed against Serbians during the 1992-1995 war in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

He had a clear vision of the kind of Korea he wished to see created, which would be based on the repudiation of Japan and vehement antagonism to communism.

vehement = strong, passionate, hot

He is man of vehement character. (He is a man with furious temper.)

Thank you for your efforts.

Regards,

V.

I would say you have interpreted almost all of them correctly - well done! Only one exception - I have never heard "cuff of the neck". I believe this should read "scruff of the neck" - this is the part of the neck on an animal or a person, at the back, not the throat. To give an example, many wild animals pick up their babies with their mouth, by the scruff of the neck.
