definite article

I would like to know what is the rule to use the article "the" or not in a sentense.

The are many rules and it's not always logical. Try asking the quetion 'which'. If you can answer it, then you should probably use 'the':

Take a chair. (here, I don't care which chair, so there is no need for 'the')

I dropped it on the carpet (I can tell you which carpet as there's usually only one in a room)
