Are the following sentences grammatically correct?

"Despite the short conversation, Kevin could not concentrate completely and his attention was captured by an old lady fixing her hair."

There's only one sentence there. It should be two, though. Replace "and" with a period ("full stop" in British English) and begin the new second sentence with a capital letter.

It's not "despite the short conversation." It's "despite the shortness of the conversation." Or "brevity of the conversation."
