Well, nouns can be divided into two basic types: concrete and abstract. The difference between the two tend to be explained in terms of what we can touch (concrete nouns) and what we can not touch (abstract nouns).
For example:
bed, tree (Concrete nouns)
idea, thought (Abstract nouns)
