Hi,

I've been searching for sites that offer graded dictations to add the "Word Surfing" site.

Students of all languages would benefit greatly, I'm sure, from the availability of a service that allowed them to ....

1. listen to individual sentences being clearly read.
2. replay each sentence as often as required - and
3. "reveal" correct sentences once an attempt had been made to write down what had been heard.

Such a site could only help students to practice vital listening and writing skills in a useful manner. It would also allow them to correct their own mistakes in a comfortable environment - and encourage them to expand their vocabulary knowledge.

Personally - (and I'm sure I'm not alone) - I'd jump at the opportunity to use internet based dictations to help me with both Spanish and Italian - so if anyone can point me in the right direction ... I'd be hugely grateful.

Finally, if no such service exists.... is anyone else out there

a) keen to see graded internet dictations become widely available?
and/or
b) interested in becoming involved in making the process happen?

If so - please reply!

Best Wishes

Will ;)

I think yours is a good idea. May I offer a suggestion?

Instead of Such a site could only help students say Such a site would help students.

Will, can I give you a tip about your site?

Either get rid of that start page, or put a text link on it to the real front page of your site.

Why do I say this?

A) The start page doesn't help anyone with English and requires the user to have the Flash plug-in.

B) More importantly, search engine spiders can't get access to your site from your root url! A text link will allow spiders to crawl the rest of your site.

I hope that helps. ;-)

For more valuable info. on marketing you can always ask me, or go to:

Graded Dictations

Dear all, many thanks for your replies....I've taken Red5's advice and removed the flash intro - and any other marketing tips would be gratefully received. It's not exactly a strength of mine ( I know nothing about "spiders" for example).... and I think that I should be concentrating a lot more on this area right now. Really , I'm quite frustrated at how long it's taking to get the WS idea out there into the big wide world.

WS simply represents a very strong conviction about the value of "organised vocabulary books" and I'm certain that, sooner or later, the idea will be helping many students of different languages. The "graded dictations" idea fits naturally with WS - and is again an opportunity that seems to be surprisingly unavailable to language learners generally. Hopefully some of the bigger organisations will use some of their resources to change that situation soon.

In the meantime...thanks again...and best wishes

Will ;)

P.S thanks Ron, you're positive suggestion
"Such a site would help students"...is much better
------but maybe we should be more definite still and just say.
"Such sites will............"
Or not?! Ron?!

thanks again

Red5 - thanks for the marketing tips - and yes, of course, let's move any discussion to wherever you think best.
Ron - thanks - you have a way with words!

Signing off for today - it's now late and cold in Germany, I feel the bed calling me.
Best wishes etc

World Surfing

Red5 - I must have been in Manchester when I joined I guess!...but now I'm in Hamburg, Germany - and will soon be heading for Valencia ,Spain ... before travelling on to Genova, Italy.....then Budapest, Hungary....Mukstar, India ...and South America ......on my "World Surfing with Word Surfing" idea for 2004/5.

Well that's the plan...so far... anyway for WS ( it's Word Surfing, Ron)

Best wishes to you wherever you are.

Dictation

Hi

I already offer a free, limited (once a month) dictation service to visitors on my web site. I would be happy to discuss extending this service (only for free) with others. I would love to be able to offer this service with other people's voices, accents etc.

Dictation Please

Merry Christmas

Hi tdol,

Thanks for your message...I'm fine - and enjoying my last few days in Hamburg before leaving for Sicily, where I'll be spending the first few months of 2004. At the moment I'm trying to find a little time to start practising "hellos" in Italian - but the days seem to be full of saying "good-byes in German" ! So it goes!

Anyway, thanks also for all your help/encouragement during 2003 - and very best wishes to you and the others at UsingEnglish for Christmas and 2004.

Have a cool yule!

Will
