Didn't you use to smoke at university? This sentence comes from Martin Hewings' ADVANCED GRAMMAR IN USE (2005 edition).

I'd just like to know whether it means 'You didn't use to smoke at university, did you?' or 'You used to smoke at university, didn't you?' since I was taught a question beginning with 'didn't/ isn't/can't etc' tends to mean the speaker is positive about the situation or event he or she is stating in the rest of the sentence.

Thank you very much.

What the book meant by positive is that the meaning of sentence is positive (i.e. yes, you used to smoke), and does not mean the connotation.
