What is the correct preposition to use when following different. Is it different from or different to? And why?

The [STRIKE]standard[/STRIKE] most popular collocation is "different from". Why? Because it's "to differ from".

But you will often hear both "different to" and "different than". And some people say they are correct.
I am not a teacher.

I think "different to" is almost exclusively used in British English.
