difficult sentence

dear sir in this sentence
And then I saw the fields
with my own eyes... watched them liquefy the dead... so they could be fed intravenously to the living.
And standing there,
facing the pure, horrifying precision...
why they use ing from in facing horrifying...

She stood there, facing the class.
He stood facing the awful scene.

Facing tells you what he was doing. His body was such that his front was to this scene.

Horrifying is an adjective that describes whatever noun comes next. You cut it off. The horrifying sight? The horrifying scene?

(What in heaven's name are you reading??)

"Standing" and "facing" are, in this passage forms of the past continuous/progressive but "they were" is omitted. "Horrifying" is an adjective.
