Disorders In, Among

I am not sure about using "in", "among", and "of" in this context:

"The doctor suspected mental disorders ( in / among / of ) the patients."

Do they mean different things in this context? Or are some of them wrong?

"in" and "among" sound good to me. "of" does not sound correct to me.
I think "in" sounds like the doctor thinks all the patients have disorders while "among" sounds like some of the patients have a disorder and some do not.

This is a very familiar question which, as this OP is new, I guess must have been asked by a different user. The last time it was asked, someone suggested using the much simpler "The doctor suspected that some of the patients were mentally ill/had a mental illness". I agreed with that suggestion then and I still do.
