Does this sound OK in English?

Hi, dear experts. I am trying to describe some features of Bulgarian people and I was wondering if this sound OK in English:

" The typical Bulgarian behaviour is marked by hypocrisy – double living is quite characteristic of most Bulgarians. Once they live for themselves and once for “what will others think of me?”

" The-omit) Typical Bulgarian behaviour is marked by hypocrisy, and 'double living' is quite characteristic of most Bulgarians: they live once for themselves and once for 'what will others think of me?'”

'double living' is a contrived word and so should be placed in single quotes.
