Hi there,

Does it make sense to write like this?

What would you have done if you had lost your job?
I cannot see any regret from this question. Can you help?

Yes, this is good.

I cannot see any [STRIKE]regret from[/STRIKE] problem with this question.
"Regret" is not used correctly here.
Can you help?

Hi there,
tks a lot. I know the past conditional is usually used for expressing regret.
Question 1
But does this question express any regret of the writer?
What would you have done if you had lost your job?

Question 2
What is the difference in meaning between the following sentences?

What would you have done if you had lost your job?

What would you do if you lost your job?

Tks a lot

Hi there,
tks a lot. I know the past conditional is usually used for expressing regret.
Oh, I see what you mean. No, that's not a true statement. The past conditional is not usually used for expressing regret.
Certainly you can use it that way.

"If I had studied harder, I could have become a brain surgeon." But even so, any regret is only implied in such a sentence.
Question 1
But does this question express any regret of the writer?
What would you have done if you had lost your job? No. There's no reason it should.

Question 2
What is the difference in meaning between the following sentences?

What would you have done if you had lost your job?
This is a hypothetical question about the past. The person hasn't lost their job, and there is no implication of such a future possibility.

What would you do if you lost your job?
This is a question about the present and future. For example, "What would you do if you lost your job tomorrow/ next year/ in 2 years time?"
Obviously you can't place adverbs of future time onto the previous question.

Tks a lot
