Hi,

I didn´t know to title this thread. I wrote an email to a friend saying " hope you and your family have enjoyed the trip to France."

and i got as a reply: " ... France was magnificent."

it is strange this construction( my friend is an english speaker) but I think it meant the trip was magnificent or it was talking about the country its beauty?

thanks

it is strange this construction( my friend is an english speaker) but I think it meant the trip was magnificent or it was talking about the country its beauty? It is not possible to know exactly what your friend meant, so one can not put too much detail into the meaning, such as "its beauty".
"France was magnificent" suggests that (s)he means that the trip to France was magnificent. But it is also very likely that your friend liked the country a lot too.
So probably "...France was magnificent." refers to the trip and the country.
thanks
