Draw on

I have tried to use "draw on" in my sentence. Would you please correct the mistakes?

The writer's latest novel draws on his stay in Africa during his formative years.

It's grammatically perfect. The only thing I would take issue with is using the word "stay" (which sounds fairly temporary) when, if he was there for his formative years, he was clearly "living" there.
You don't need to use either. You could say:

The writer's latest novel draws on/draws inspiration from his formative years in Africa.

You could also use "time" instead of "stay".
