Dear teacher,

Sentence 2 sounds correct to me, but sentence 1 is taken from the NYT. Could you explain what difference, if any , is between them? Thanks.

They mean the same thing. 2 would be more colloquial, more common in speech.
1. sounds more elegant, and I'd use that form in an essay.
