Hi,

Do you know what an engine room is? If you do, could you tell me where I would see one?
Thank you very much.

There would be many places where you would see an "engine room."

It is the place where all the machinery is for a building or even for a boat.

The "engine room" in an apartment complex is where the heating and cooling equipment is. The "engine room" on a ship is where the motor is.

Can you give us a sentence or tell us where you saw this term?

In BrE, it would tend to mean the part of a ship where the main engines are housed.

(I'm interested to hear that it can apply to buildings in the US.)

All the best,

MrP

The "engine room" can also be used metaphorically to mean the place where things get done or even to mean the organisation that gets things moving. We can say, for instance, that the students' union is the engine room of university student politics or that the tactics room is the engine room of improved team performance for a sports club.
Hope this helps.
