why PUT and BUT are spelled differentlly

Why are put and but spelled differently?

Well, the beginning consonant sounds are different and so are the vowel sounds. Do they sound the same to you?

(The letters p and b are formed in a similar but not identical fashion.)

P.S. Welcome to the forum! :D

If my answer was inadequate, perhaps someone else will come by with a better one.

I agree- they sound different to us and the spelling is logical, although that isn't always the case in English. ;-)
