Why does "fat chance" have almost the same, negative meaning as "slim chance"??

I don't get it. :?

Maybe because it looks big but when you take off the fat, which is useless, there's not much meat?
Just a shot in the dark...

 I'm laughing at the other responses. They're really cute, especially blacknomi's.

Here's my guess: What about?

"fat" as in the negative sense of big (i.e., Impolite: That's a fat person versus Polite: That's a big person.)

Fat chance (Not a big chance)
Slim chance (Not a big chance)

All the best, :D

You didn't know you had an audience? You may want to have a lil chat with the guy who is selling tickets outside ;-)
