If you have, for example, been working or playing in a particular area and dropped things on the ground, do you tidy up the area before you leave it? This is the meaning of "do you pick up after yourself?". Children who leave their clothes lying around the house are often told they must pick up after themselves – their parents might say that they are tired of picking up after them.
