At lunch, Lara brought us sandwiches in the conserva¬tory—which, it turned out, was a large, sunlit room that housed the biggest piano I’d ever seen, as well as about a thousand ferns—and told us that she’d talked to Dad. He would be home later that evening, and we had his per¬mission to go to the village with Nick and Daisy.
