In which case is the series weekly and in which case daily?

If the series is weekly, I suppose that we are talking about the first episode ever. If it is daily, we are talking about the first episode of the week, but not necessarily the very first episode.

I think this is a pretty strange question!

It will not be completely clear, not matter what one does with these words. IMO, #2 implies that there was more than one episode last week. But it still doesn't go as far as daily. The other two could have a daily, weekly, or monthly series -- or anything in between. :wink:

In the case of the first and third sentences, we would normally assume that it is a weekly series because that is the normal pattern. However, that is an assumption made by the reader (or listener) and is not indicated by the sentences themselves.
