Hello everyone
I'd like to ask about the phrase "look fish-eyed".

The tank's driver, a surprisingly cheerful lieutenant named Neil Albert, said, "Comin' up on it, kids. We've now entered R-8."
"Shouldn't there be a fanfare or something?" Bowles asked.
"Yeah," Ndoci said, "like the lights all going dark or something."
Balidemaj chuckled. "We should all look fish-eyed now."

What does 'look fish-eyed' imply?

When I say that humans look as fishes do, I thought of those coldly glaring individuals popularly called "fishy-eyed" because their eyes have the impersonal stare of a dead fish.

Is R-8 a potentially dangerous place, or is it a place where they hope to track down/find someone or something? Because a 'fisheyed' lens is used in photography, and covers a field of vision of 180 degrees. I presume it is so called because fish have something like a 180 degree field of vision, unlike we humans. He is in effect saying, start looking all around, all over the place, either keeping a look-out for danger, or trying to find somebody/something as they drive along.

R-8 is a very dangerous place because the area is infected with a very poisonous substance and the soldiers are wearing battlesuits covering every part of the body for protection. They were sent there to destroy towers the aliens were constructing.

I am in full agreement with DavidL's wisecrack regarding the right for the present case meaning of the expression "look fish-eyed".

Every educated person know that human eyes are set not squarely on the front of the face. Humans eyes are cocked slightly to ach side.

That human divergence causes no inconvenience when a person looks at distant objects. When he looks at close objects for long period he forces his eyes to twist towards each other (look fish-eyed) and so strains this muscles.

In the present case the meaning of the sentence "We should all look fish-eyed." could be "We should all be more attentive" "We should be all eyes." "We should keep both eyes open."
