Hello teachers and members

In After rain (W. Trevor) there is a sentence:

In church 'Harriet walks slowly past flaring candles and the tomb of a local family, past the relics of the altar, and the story of Santa Fabiola flaking in a side chapel.'

Please someone tell me what is meaning of underlined words. Many thanks

I assume that the story of this saint is painted on the wall of the side chapel and is beginning to flake off. Small flakes of the paint are falling / have fallen from the wall.

It sounds to me like it's referring to an old fading painting or mural with bits of paint falling off.

(EDIT: Wow! 5jj is one scary dude!)
