The sculptor (who is at a seaside quarry) imagines his buyers might float away their statues in boats"

Does it mean that the buyers are floatong away in boats moving away from his sculptures?

Just to make you understand: The sculptor imagines that the buyers will buy the statues (sculpted by him) and take it (the statues) away in boats. The buyers are not floating away , they are buying the stautes and going away taking the statues with them.
