Does "For" mean "because"? (FANBOYS - a coordinator conjunction). Is the second sentence hypothetical situation, and can we use "could" or "would" instead of "might'?

"For if we were better informed about the risks involved in excessive consumption of food and fizzy drinks and alcohol, we might at least be able to help ourselves. This is why the problem of obesity is also the problem of education."

Yes 'for' means 'because' there. You could use 'would' but 'might' works better there.
