Based on a true story-----

For the Sake of a Hat

Three companions were on a bridge.
Two of them decided to play a joke on the other.
They took his hat and threw it into the river.
With the impetuosity of youth,
He dove into the rushing stream.
From where they stood
They could hear him scream.
When he realized what he had done
It was too late.
Already, he had sealed his fate.
The current was just too strong.
Inexorably, it pulled him along.
He couldn't fight the river,
And he was lost in the turbid water.
The young man drowned, and that was that.
Thus he died for the sake of a hat.

Great story. I like how you re-wrote a sad, hard-news event and turned it into an emotional poem. I just added some suggestions on wording. Hope you don't mind.
