formal letter writing

When writing a letter for my boss, am I supposed to put my initials anywhere to indicate the letter was written by someone else?

I think it depends on how your boss would feel about it.

How do your initials indicate that your letter was written by someone else? I can't understand that. Can you (or someone else) explain?

In the old days, when secretaries would type the letters, the boss's initials (Big Boss) would go in capital letters and then the secretary's initials (kindly secretary) go following a slash in the very bottom left corner:

BB/ks

I don't think that's done any longer. No one needs to know who wrote the words. They care only about who signed it.
