The tests may be free, but you need somebody to look at them. (Apparently, at least some of them were designed by NNES.)

Here are examples of two of my "wrong" answers on one of the *Advanced* tests.

  • Answer 1 out of 10The company had its own code of practice in these matters.

    Your answer was: incorrect
The company had its own code of behaviour in these matters.

I have never heard of a code of practice before, but we would in this country (USA) say (as I did) code of behavior.

  • Answer 4 out of 10Thousands of subscribers are already signing up for this new telephone service.

    Your answer was: incorrect
Thousands of individuals are already signing up for this new telephone service.

The person would not be a subscriber until after he had signed up for the plan, and if he is already a subscriber why would he call to sign up for the plan? My answer is the right one.

I think it might be an AE / BE thing Ronbee. I've heard of 'Code of practice', and so has Google:

'Code of practice' = 934,000
'Code of behaviour' = 19,000

Hey English learners, please try out our free tests at http://www.english-test.net and join the community at http://www.english-test.net/forum Thanks!

Clark. I'm not sure why you are trying to promote your site on our forum - we are one of your partner sites and english-test.net is our only partner site (see https://www.usingenglish.com/partner-sites.html ). If you would like to take part in our forum then we would be most pleased, otherwise, please don't post this sort of thing again.

Spell that code of behavior and you might get more responses.

I think you are right. I only took three of the tests (one in each category), but it does seem to be skewed towards BE. Thus, responses based on AE might be marked "wrong".

I think the "subscribers" answer is totally wrong. What say you?

:)

I agree with you that it is a little confusing; why would a subscriber sign up again?!!

Google however, came up with 161 hits of this particular phrase:
Results here.

I don't think I'll be taking any of those tests again soon. I've pretty much got the English usage thing down.
