Hi there,

Should 'make' or 'meet' goes with friends? I want to say 'will have more new friends.

1. ...makes more friends...
2. ... meets more friends

I've used both. I think I say, "We will all make new friends," more often than I say, "We will all meet new friends." Either way, I don't discern any difference in meaning.

As these two phrases stand, they mean different things:
1. ...makes more friends...
One has friends, and being sociable, going out to places where you meet more and more people, you have the chance to make even more friends

2. ... meets more friends
You will meet more (of your) friends at your local pub than you will in a strange town.
or
He has met up with some friends, and he and these friends are meeting up with even more friends later on at some party or other event.

One meets people, and you may never see them again. One makes friends among the people one meets by talking, socializing, and finding that you get on really well together.

Both sentences are correct.
1. I want to make new friends. This indicates that you want to expand your present list of friends. Making new friends indicates that you would like to have an ongoing friendship with other people.

2. I want to meet new friends. This sentence indicates that you would like to socialize with some new individuals on a casual basis. Perhaps this informal socialization will lead you to a more permanent friendship with the people you meet.

In general terms, you will need to 'meet' people before you can 'make' friends.

You and I are 'meeting' in the Forum. However, this does not necessarily 'make' us friends.
