"It is possible that, when the column is too wide, Microsoft Excel simply ignores the column from a certain point on and, by doing so, causes an error!"

hi,
is the bold text correct?
how would a native say?
is the structure of the sentence fine?
thanks.

Without context, it looks fine.

I'm not a teacher, but it looks fine and sounds natural to me. One variant construction you might see would be "in so doing" instead of "by doing so". I'd be more likely to say "by doing so", but if you see "in so doing", it means the same thing.
