Hi,

Could anyone help me with the following underlined clauses? Thank you very much.

1. The cultural dynamics of racism, intertwined as they are with those of class and patriarchy, assume a naturalness which is contingent upon ruling out counterhegemonic voices as illegitimate.

2.In contributing to the perpetuation of this language of 'us and them', the news media have made us se the world as a mean and dangerous place and thereby diminished the quality of our lives. Moreover, to the extent that they have emphasized the ways in which the distribution of social and economic risks breaks down along racial lines, they have helped to tear us apart.

3. Multiracial coverages will be reported form a perspective where the 'us' being invoked is made to represent all citizens, thereby ensuring that people of color are represented on equal terms with white people. Unwarranted fears based on prejudices will be alleviated as the last vestiges of racism are finally removed from the gatekeeper rank.

I think by counterhegemonic he means dissent from the prevailing point of view.

to the extent that they have emphasized the ways in which the distribution of social and economic risks breaks down along racial lines

Wealth has never either here or anywhere been equally distributed. To some, that represents an injustice. To others, it is a fact of life.

By "gatekeeper rank" he is, I think, referring to people who work in the media.

I think the gatekeeper rank means the last possible position- the people who, although not part of the media, are employed there- so everybody is included. I'm not too sure though. ;-)
