I'm a student attending junior college in the states. I've learned a few slangs/new phrases every now and then. One classmate made a comment regarding an reading assingment,

"That's just "gay"."

I know gay in its usual term, but exactly what did he mean? thanks in advance

He's means it's rubbish or annoying etc.

That's right. But other shades of meaning for North Americans include: naive, puerile, cliché, soft, overly feminine, overly emotional, pathetic, etc.

On the other hand, the word has many positive meanings as well.

It could also simply mean "uncool."
