why are some verbs followed by a gerund and others by an infinitive? enjoy, for instance. What is the origin of the grammar?

Sadly, it's hard to give reasons why- mostly, it's just habit. ;-)

I have asked the same question many times. There doesn't seem to be a good answer. :?
