What is the diference between the present participle and the gerund?

The present participle is an -ing form of verb. EG: You are working, I was writing, they will be playing, she wasn't joking.

The gerund is a type of noun ending in -ing. EG: I enjoy reading, swimming is very good for you, that was a great piece of writing.
