Help!

Question #1: In the sentence "She came home running." is running a Gerund, or a Participle?

If it's a participle, what is it modifying?

And Question #2.. Can participles act as adverbs, modifying verbs or adjectives?

I'd really appreciate any light shed on this. Me eyes are spinning in their sockets!

‘Running’ in Q.1 is a participial adjective (verbal adjective) modifying the pronoun ‘She’. It’s a subjective complement after ‘came’ which functions as linking verb.

Participles cannot act as adverbs, modifying verbs or adjectives.
