Hi,

What does the phrase "getting it over with" mean in the sentence below?

Mamma believed in getting us all infected with a disease at the same time and getting it over with.

Many thanks.

When you know something unpleasant is coming, and you simply want to do it quickly so that it's no longer something you have to think about with dread, you want to get it over with.

To put it another way, "Let's get this over with" is something you say when you want something unpleasant to be in your past instead of your future.
