Hi there,
In our culture, when two people fall in love with each other, they will exchange a gift to represent they love each other. Is it called ‘Engagement gift’? Is there such a thing in western cultures?

Hi, in Poland and I guess that not only in Poland a man buys a women a ring as an engagement gift, if she accepts the gift it menas that she agrees to marry him usually in a short time.

The man buys his prospective bride an engagement ring. She may also receive engagement presents from family and friends, particularly if there is an engagement party (=a social gathering to celebrate the engagement).

But I think he asked the thing or gift exchanged when two meet together and fall in love with each other. But engagement means 'having formally agree to marry'. I don't think showing love each other does not mean they have reached in the state of engagement. Still think of proper words for this.

When two people meet and fall in love, they may well give each other some token of it. For example, he may give her a locket to wear around her neck, in the shape of a heart. When the locket is opened, there is a picture of her on one side, and of him on the other. They may buy chains to wear around the neck. On the chains, they each wear half of a heart ( where the metal heart has been split with a jagged cut) to represent how now, they are 'of one heart and mind'.

(1) is fine but (2) sounds clumsy because you repeat 'love' - why else would he give her a love token if not for the very reason, he loves her
