Dear teachers,
Would you be kind enough to tell me whether I am right with my interpretation of the expression in bold in the following sentence from the Dreiser’s “An American Tragedy”?
And Jill Trumbull, sitting beside him, wanted to know where he came from, what his own home life and connections were like… Questions which… gave Clyde pause. He did not feel that he could admit the truth, in connection with his family at all.
give pause = cause one to hesitate,
Thank you for your efforts.
Regards,
V.
