Hello. I'm wondering what Surfers means here.
The background of the story is Australia. And the write is in Year 11.
So, does it mean "most of the kids have gone to college?"

Most of the kids from our year - except Maggie and me - have gone to Surfers or taken jobs. I should have gone for an interview back in September, (Now is December) but I didn't.

If there is actually a college/university in Australia called "Surfers" (seems unlikely) then you could be right.

Otherwise, I assume that maybe they are talking about the school holidays and that Maggie and the author are the only two people who haven't either taken a (part-time) job or gone to "Surfers' Paradise", a popular vacation area on the Gold Coast. See:
