gone as adjective

I'd like a clear explanation as regards the use of " gone".
I can't understand when and why I have to use it with the have auxiliary and when and why with the be auxiliary.

ex: He was gone
or He had gone

Hi Paolo, I think the answer is in the very title of your post. 'Gone' can be used as an adjective after 'be', to say that somebody is away or that something has disappeared or that there is no more: Is the coffee all gone?. I think 'finished' can also be used in a similar way -with a different meaning-. I hope you find this useful. Ci vediamo.
