Today's headline:

Governor grabs for political prize. If propositions pass, his strengh will grow.

What is the difference between grab and grab for? Any difference between the following two sentences:

1. He grabs for the gun.
2. He grabs the gun.

Thanks.

The difference between the two is illustrated by your example sentences. In the first one "He grabs for the gun" means he reaches for the gun. He is trying to get the gun. In the second one "He grabs the gun" means he gets the gun. It is the difference between attempt and success.
