Dear Experts,

I am bit confused between the usage of Simple past tense and present perfect tense. Also usage of "Have + past participle" and "DID" in the below sentences. I request you to kindly clarify.

1. a. The boys emptied (empty) the water can. They must have been thirsty.
b. The boys have emptied (empty) the water can. They must have been thirsty.

2. a. Have you taken (take) a look at files on the CD I gave you?
b. Did you take (take) a look at files on the CD I gave you?

Not sure how to understand the above statements. I would be very much thankful to you all for your time and valuable inputs.

Many Thanks

Sudha

I'm not sure what you are asking about the sentences. They are all correct but imply different things.
